Kim Hopson

Kim Hopson is a multidisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, NY. In her work, Kim explores themes of physical limitation, otherness, and ableist bias in society. Her intention is to create a larger dialogue around these topics.

“Experiencing life in a disabled body has given me a unique viewpoint that is reflected in my work. In my paintings, I focus on my body’s relationship to the world, both physically and emotionally. Motherhood has made that difference a more central part of my art, and my work has expanded to examine my experiences in the context of parenthood. At times I have found it challenging to connect with other mothers because my struggles are focused on my disability, as well as the universal struggles of motherhood. I illustrate floating torsos to convey the feeling of connection and disconnection to others. I incorporate symbols from my childhood including fading limbs and pom poms, which act as obfuscation of missing limbs, and sometimes become the focal point of the composition. Through my work, my intention is to create dialogue around these topics in order to spark a larger conversation.”
