Catriona Gray

I am a photographic artist and mother of 2 young children, Leonard and Audrey. I work exclusively with alternative photographic processes, including chemigram, Polaroid and roll film destruction, plant-based developers, cyanotype, anthotype, phytograms and liquid emulsion. I found my love of alternative processes in the late '90s studying at Glasgow School of Art. After graduating I spent some years working as a darkroom printer for some of the best photographers of the day. I then went on to work as a commercial photographer and in commercial studios. My heart drew me back to alternative processes and I began designing and running workshops for the public and in a healthcare setting. I am also involved in running a wonderful darkroom in Camden, north London.

I've travelled extensively and spent several years living in Kyiv, Ukraine. I love flaws, mistakes, accidents. I love the unexpected. I feel this is very important and lacking in the lives of many people - a physical process with a beginning, middle and end, no option to Command Z, no endless tweaking. Processes full of chances to 'fail', to feel surprised, disappointed or let down, to question your reaction to that, to let go of control a bit.
