Ruth Batham

Held Heard Safe, Acrylic on paper, 2022.

Ruth Batham, born in the Black Country, moved to London to study at Wimbledon School of Art. In 2019, she was an offsite painter at Turps Art School. Ruth's work combines a drawing and painting process with a background in Human Science. Having studied at UCL, she interrogated what it is to be human from a range of disciplines, such as Anatomy, History of Medicine and Anthropology. This alongside her role as an educator informs her painting practice. She has exhibited across London and has work in private collections.

The inspiration and concepts behind her work is in essence - people. As a socially minded artist, her concerns center around human connectedness, relationships and interactions. How we perceive each other and learn from each other has always held a fascination. Through her process, she often feels like a collector of people. Drawing informs her painting - an ongoing aspect of her work is to collect and draw people from a range of reference points: other art, photos, real life, books and exhibitions. These then feed into her paintings. She will chop and choose aspects based around a key theme, currently with a focus on Motherhood.
