About

Spilt Milk was founded in 2018 and was formally constituted as a Community Interest Company in August 2020 when the first board of directors was also formed. We are in the process of recruiting two new board members to join us and we have one vacancy left to fill in order to complete our team.

We are specifically looking for someone with skills and experience of income generation who can help us secure the financial sustainability of the organisation. Do you have experience of writing funding applications, developing business plans, or securing sponsorship? If so, we would love to hear from you.

We strive to be a diverse board rooted in intersectional feminist values who represent a wide range of voices from different backgrounds and experiences. We welcome applications from all people regardless of their age, gender, race, disability, class, cultural background, sexual orientation, maternity/paternity or marital status. You do not have to identify as a mother or as an artist to be part of the board but must share our values and be understanding of the various challenges faced by artists with caring responsibilities.

Spilt Milk is a small organisation run mostly on a voluntary basis. The founding director takes responsibility for the management and delivery of the daily operations of the company, supported by occasional freelance staff and volunteers during exhibitions. As a very small team, board members are encouraged to take a more hands on approach and offer their time to help out at events when they are able to.

This is a great opportunity to develop your leadership skills and we are keen to support those who are committed to growing into the role and developing their skills, whether or not they have prior experience of being on a board.

This is a voluntary role and each new board member will be required to:

  • Attend at least 6 board meetings per year including the AGM. Meetings take place every two months and are either held online or in-person in Edinburgh.

  • Actively contribute to the board by offering your skills, knowledge and experience to help the organisation achieve its goals.

  • Be an advocate for the organisation, championing our work and representing our voice.

  • Support the founding director in an advisory capacity to ensure we are meeting the organisation’s aims and objectives.

  • Oversee and be accountable for the organisation’s financial stability and effective governance.

  • Get involved with our activities as and when required (for example attending our exhibition previews, helping to set up events and promoting our activities.)

How to Apply

Please email an up to date C.V. along with a short statement outlining why you are interested in joining the board, and the relevant skills or experience you can bring to the organisation. As an alternative, we will also accept applications in the form of a short video.

Please email your application to Lauren McLaughlin with the subject line ‘Application for board member’ to info@spiltmilkgallery.com by February 24th 2023.

If you would like to have an informal conversation with the current board members, or have any questions prior to submitting an application, please get in touch.
