Sally Butcher is an artist, lecturer and researcher based in Birmingham, UK. Her practice engages with feminist discourse on female subjectivity and embodiment across spheres of the domestic, maternal and erotic, explored mostly through the visual languages of drawing, printmaking and photography. Fine Art making is driven by her background in Cultural Studies research, a theoretical and critical focus which also fuels her teaching. Her work has been exhibited in juried shows nationally and internationally and is held in public and private collections. She has recently undertaken her Arts Council funded research practice project (2021-22): ‘Re.conceive: Investigating the Invisibility of Infertility in the Maternal Visual Arts’, which sought to reframe narratives of normative reproduction with representations of the sub-maternal. Through this, she has been featured in Elephant magazine, Maternal Art, Mothers Who Make, Artist Mother Podcast, Female Photographers, M.A.M.A. with Procreate Project (forthcoming), Coventry Biennial, and shortlisted for Jerwood Photoworks award. Her essay ‘Ma - Reframing the Representation of the Maternal Subject in the (Negative) Space of (M)otherhood’ is to be published in the anthology ‘An Artist and A Mother’ in 2023.
