Exhibition Open Call

Submission Deadline Friday 29th July 2022.



Spilt Milk Gallery CIC are inviting submissions of work in all mediums to be considered for our upcoming physical exhibition in Edinburgh, October 2022. 

The exhibition committee is interested in work which explores the relationship between geographies, maps and emotions. Responses may want to explore the following themes and ideas; an atlas of emotion, emotional mapping, the longitude and latitude of life, mapping motherhood, travelling domestic, conflict mapping, mapping mindset, memory mapping.

We were particularly inspired by Brené Brown’s book Atlas of the Heart where she gets to the core of “mapping meaningful connection and the language of human experience.”


The exhibition will take place at Edinburgh Palette, St Margaret’s House, 151 London Road, Edinburgh, EH7 6AE. 

Key Dates:

Exhibition Dates: October 8th - 29th (PV Sat 8th October 2-5pm)

  • Deadline for submissions 29th July 5pm

  • Artists will be notified by 31st August

  • Selected work must arrive at the gallery by 30th September 


Women and non-binary artists who are mothers/carers of any age and living anywhere in the world are invited to apply. 


Submission to the exhibition is free for members of Spilt Milk and non-members are welcome to apply subject to a small admin fee. New members are welcome to join us before the open call deadline. More information about becoming a member can be found here. 

Artists can submit one work for consideration in any medium including moving image and installation. All submissions will be reviewed by the exhibition committee which is made up of current members of Spilt Milk. Selected artists are responsible for transporting their work to and from the gallery by the dates outlined and are responsible for all associated shipping costs including customs fees for work sent from outside the UK.

FAQ’s

Does my work have to be framed?

No, we are happy to hang work unframed with magnets, bull clips or poster hangers. Please specify upon submission if you have a preference. 

Can I submit a proposal for an unrealised artwork, or site-specific installation?

Yes but it can be difficult for the committee to visualise an unrealised work so we encourage you to give as much detail as possible and include preliminary images, sketches or images of similar past work.

I’m an international artist, can I have my digital photography printed in Scotland to save on shipping costs?

Yes, some artists working in digital prints may wish to print their work in Scotland or UK and have it sent directly to the gallery for the exhibition. For specialist fine art photography we recommend checking out https://amimage.co.uk/ or https://www.bare-branding.co.uk/ Alternatively there are many UK based online printing companies.

Can my work be for sale?

Yes, if you would like to have your work available for sale we will ask for your artist price as part of the submission. All works for sale will be subject to a spilt milk commission of 30% plus applicable VAT. 

Can you help me price my work?

Pricing work is very individual based on the artist’s work and exhibition history. We cannot price artwork on behalf of artists but would suggest you undertake market research to see what other artists with a similar practice and career stage are charging. All prices for this submission must be in GBP.

How do I organise the return of my work after the exhibition?

Most artists can book their return shipping online once the exhibition is finished. Please keep a note of the size and weight of your parcel when sending it to the gallery. We will keep the packaging and pack your work once the show is finished. Depending on the size and weight of your parcel you can book shipping online via the Royal Mail, Parcelforce, Fedex or UPS and send us the shipping label to print and attach to the parcel.

If an artist fails to arrange the collection or return of their work after the deadline given, we reserve the right to dispose of your work as we do not have any storage available.

I am sending from outside the UK, how much will the custom fees be?

Customs duty will depend on where you are sending the work from, the size and the value of the package. Please note that there are strict rules around the shipping of artworks internationally and many artists tend not to declare the package as ‘art’ but instead declare the work as a ‘gift.’ Fees are calculated as a percentage of the total value of what you are sending. Please check with your local post office or shipping company for up to date rules and customs regulations. Spilt Milk will not be responsible for any fees incurred as a result of customs clearance. Please also note that some shipping companies will not deliver the parcel until the fees are paid therefore resulting in potential delays. 

Do I need to provide plinths for sculpture?

No, we will provide plinths. 

Do I need to provide technical equipment for digital works?

We have one projector and one tv screen available. If your work requires specialist equipment such as projection, speakers, screens etc you will need to provide these yourself. For selected video submissions we will show these either on a screen or projected onto the wall. Depending on how many videos are selected, we may play films on a slideshow loop.
